What personal data we collect and why we collect it

This website is powered by WordPress, a content management system that can capture some limited personal data for authentication and shopping, but most of those features are turned off on this site. The site also uses third-party plugins and media players such as YouTube and Vimeo. These use cookies to function and for their own analytics and advertising.

Comments

Comments are disabled on most pages, but if a visitor leaves a comment, then we collect the data shown in the comments form, and also the visitor’s IP address and browser user agent string to help spam detection. An anonymised string created from your email address (also called a hash) may be provided to the Gravatar service to see if you are using it. The Gravatar service privacy policy is available here: https://automattic.com/privacy/. After approval of your comment, your profile picture is visible to the public in the context of your comment.

Media

You can’t upload media to the website unless you’re the administrator, but if you somehow manage to, then you should avoid uploading images with embedded location data (EXIF GPS) included. Visitors to the website can download and extract any location data from pictures on the site.

Cookies

If you leave a comment on our site (and in most cases, you can’t), you may opt-in to save your name, email address and website in cookies. These are for your convenience so that you do not have to fill in your details again when you leave another comment.

Embedded content from other websites

Articles on this site include embedded content (e.g. videos, images, music). Embedded content from other websites behaves in the same way as if the visitor has visited that other site.
These other websites may collect data about you, use cookies, embed additional third-party tracking, and monitor your interaction with that embedded content, including tracking your interaction with the embedded content if you have an account with that website and are logged in.

Analytics

Our web hosting provider Tsohost collects anonymous analytics data. They use Awstats.

Who we share your data with

Our web hosting provider Tsohost collects anonymous analytics data, and stores it in the UK.

How long we retain your data

Mostly, you can’t leave comments. However, if you do, the comment and its metadata can remain indefinitely. That way, we can recognise and approve any follow-up comments automatically instead of holding them in a moderation queue.

There’s no option to register on our website. However, if you manage to, then know that we store the personal information provided in a user profile. All users can see, edit, or delete their personal information at any time (except they cannot change their username). Website administrators can also view and edit that information.

What rights you have over your data

If you have an account on this site or have left comments, you can request to receive an exported file of the personal data we hold about you, including any data you have provided to us. You can also ask that we erase any personal data we hold about you. That does not include data we are obliged to keep for administrative, legal, or security purposes. However, there is no option to create an account on this site. So this shouldn’t be an issue.

Where we send your data

Visitor comments may be checked through an automated spam detection service.

Cookie Declaration

Cookies on this site include a WordPress cookie to check whether your browser supports emoji and cookies associated with the Cookie Yes cookie banner that pops up when you visit. There are also cookies associated with the third-party media players YouTube, Vimeo, and Spotify. These may operate in the same way as if you’d visited those sites directly. That includes cookies necessary for them to function and also cookies for their own analytics and advertisement practices.
